Do’s and Don’t for First Time Remote Business Owners in 2025

Starting a remote business in 2025? You’re in for a wild ride. The freedom is unmatched, but the challenges are very real.

Remote business life can be both chaotic and rewarding. I’ve been doing it for almost a decade in multiple countries and I’ve learned a lot. Here are the do’s and don’t’s I wish I’d known:

DO: Plan for Tech Failures

Your Wi-Fi will go down at the worst possible moment. Your cloud storage will fill up mid-upload. And your Zoom audio? Yeah, it’ll glitch.

Plan for it. Backup everything. Keep a hotspot handy. And when tech fails, take a deep breath. It happens to everyone.

Pro tip: “Let’s try that again” is a phrase every remote business owner should have in their back pocket.

DON’T: Confine Yourself to a Desk

Embrace the freedom of working wherever you like right away.

Whether that’s a park bench, a cafe, your couch.

You’ve left the office for a reason and it can be hard to shake those corporate habits immediately but it’s okay for you to enjoy your new found freedom and still be doing serious work.

DO: Regularly Reassess Your Goals

What worked for your business last month might not work this month. Remote businesses thrive when they stay adaptable.

Set aside time each quarter to reflect: Are your tools still effective? Are your clients aligned with your vision? Are you hitting your revenue targets?

Growth comes from adjusting, not staying static.

Warning: Sooner or later when something isn’t working it will hit you on the side of the head and say fix this!

DON’T: Shy Away From the Fact That Your First Clients Will be Your Friends

You’ve already built trust with these people and they want to support you. Just make sure you deliver for them like you would any other client.

And if you don’t think you can do that, be honest and let them know. That’s what friends are for.

DO: Remember Why You Started

It’s easy to get lost in the grind. But remember: you chose this path for a reason.

Was it to spend more time with your family? To ditch the commute? To finally work on something you love?

Keep that “why” front and center. Write it down. Tape it to your wall. Look at it every time the work feels overwhelming.

Because, trust me, it will. But the freedom? The flexibility? The chance to build something that’s 100% yours?

Totally worth it.

DON’T: Ignore the Power of Community

Running a remote business doesn’t mean you have to go it alone.

Find your people. Join an online mastermind, hop on Slack channels, or attend virtual networking events. Go see people LIVE! There are plenty of us out here and it’s fun to succeed together. Plus it’s a great way to build your network.

DO: Embrace Automation

2025 is all about working smarter, not harder. From email sequences to invoicing, there’s a tool for everything.

Use Zapier to connect apps, set up auto-responses for FAQs, or schedule posts in advance with tools like Buffer or Later.

The less time you spend on repetitive tasks, the more time you have to focus on growth. Bonus: Your future self will thank you.

DON’T: Try to Do Everything Yourself

You can’t—and shouldn’t—be the CEO, marketer, accountant, and tech support all at once.

Hire help. Maybe it’s a virtual assistant for admin tasks or a freelancer to handle social media. Even part-time support can make a massive difference.

Remember: delegating isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s how businesses grow.
